IPython Installation
IPython is a pure-Python package with a handful of optional dependencies, so installing it takes a single command. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows and supports every currently maintained Python version, and the recommended installers are pip and conda.
Installing with pip
For a quick, user-level install on any platform where Python is already available:
python3 -m pip install ipython
pip automatically pulls in the required dependencies such as decorator, jedi (completion), and prompt_toolkit. To upgrade an existing installation to the newest release:
python3 -m pip install --upgrade ipython
Installing with Conda
Conda users get a curated build with all extras resolved ahead of time. A common strategy is to create a dedicated environment so interactive experiments never disturb the system interpreter:
conda create -n ipy python=3.11 ipython
conda activate ipy
Verifying the Installation
Open a terminal, run ipython, and check the banner. The startup line names the version and the Python build it runs on:
$ ipython
Python 3.11.7 (main, ...) [Clang 15.0.0]

Optional Dependencies
Several IPython capabilities rely on extra packages. Install them only if you need the corresponding feature:
qtconsole— adds the rich terminal-with-widgets Qt console.notebookorjupyterlab— adds the browser interfaces backed by IPython kernels.blackorautopep8— enables automatic code formatting of cells.matplotlib— required for inline plotting in notebooks and the Qt console.
A single line covers the whole interactive stack:
python3 -m pip install ipython qtconsole matplotlib jupyter
Summary
Install IPython with pip install ipython or conda create -n ipy python=3.11 ipython, verify with ipython --version, and add qtconsole, matplotlib, or jupyter packages as optional extras.
