Beautiful Soup Overview
Beautiful Soup is a Python library for pulling data out of HTML and XML documents. It sits on top of a parser (html.parser, lxml, or html5lib) and gives you simple, Pythonic ways to find tags, extract text, and reshape the document.
Why Beautiful Soup?
Raw HTML in the wild is messy: unclosed tags, broken attributes, inconsistent nesting. A parser turns it into a tree, and Beautiful Soup adds a friendly navigation API on top of that tree. You can find elements by tag name, attribute, CSS selector, or text content, and you can modify the tree in memory.
- Tolerates broken, mixed, or real-world HTML without crashing.
- Works with both HTML and XML input.
- Pairs naturally with requests, urllib, or local files.
- Small API to learn: find, find_all, select, get_text.
A Quick Example
pip install beautifulsoup4
from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
html = "<html><body><h1>Hello</h1><p class="note">Welcome</p></body></html>"
soup = BeautifulSoup(html, "html.parser")
print(soup.h1.text) # Hello
print(soup.find("p", class_="note").text) # Welcome
print(soup.prettify()) # pretty-printed HTML
When to Use Beautiful Soup
Use Beautiful Soup when you need to parse a known HTML structure and extract values, when documents are not perfectly well-formed, or when you need to convert HTML to text or XML. For heavy crawling across many pages, pair it with a HTTP client such as requests and add delays and caching. For fully well-formed documents a plain XML parser is faster, but Beautiful Soup remains the most forgiving option.
Summary
Beautiful Soup converts messy HTML or XML into a navigable tree and provides a simple API for finding tags, reading text, and editing documents. Install it with pip, pass a document and a parser to the BeautifulSoup constructor, and use methods like find, find_all, select, and get_text to extract the data you need.
